Growatt Solar Inverter and Battery Storage Buying Checklist: What I Learned as a Non-Engineer

I'm the office administrator for a 60-person company. I manage purchasing for office supplies, service contracts, and one surprise renewable energy project. In 2024, the ops director said, 'help us evaluate proposals for solar and battery backup.' I'm not an engineer, so this is not another teardown of inverter specs. It's the buying checklist I built after sitting through too many calls where people talked about amps without checking what our facility actually needed.

This checklist is for the person who has to approve a quote—at a distribution company, an installation company, or an end customer's office. It assumes you are comparing a Growatt system, likely with battery storage, but the process works for other brands too.

1. Define the job before getting lost in inverter specs

Solar inverters are sold by continuous power rating, but a wrong-sized system starts with a wrong assumption. Are you trying to reduce daytime electric bills, keep a few critical loads running during power cuts, or run a warehouse from a large battery? Each leads to different equipment.

For simple bill offset on a stable grid, a grid-tie inverter without battery can be enough. A battery only makes sense if you need evening use, outage protection, or if the utility pays you very little for exported solar.

At my company, the priority was keeping two server racks and the building entrance system online during outages. That changed the quote. The sales engineer was talking about panel production. I had to interrupt and say, 'backup is more important to us than maximum kWh.' Once we made that clear, the proposal went in a different direction.

2. Know what the inverter will actually do

Everyone wants a hybrid inverter now, but not every hybrid is set up to run loads when the grid goes down. 'Hybrid' in a brochure does not always mean 'backup.'

If someone quotes a growatt 5kw hybrid inverter, ask for the full model code. Then check three things on the datasheet: maximum PV input voltage, battery voltage range, and whether it has a backup output. On detailed specification documents, the backup output is often called EPS or off-grid output. If that word is missing, the inverter probably won't power your building during a blackout.

Same for 'growatt 6k inverter' searches. A 6kW grid-tie inverter and a 6kW hybrid inverter are not interchangeable. In North America, look for a UL 1741 listing. In many other markets, IEC 62109 is the safety baseline. If the vendor cannot show a relevant compliance mark, price should not be your first question.

3. Quote by SKU, not by model nickname

What I saw in online listings over the last year was a wide range for equipment with similar names. Maybe some of that was a difference between authorized distribution stock and imported units on the gray market.

4. Size the battery storage bank in kWh, not just in kW

I need to admit something: I once said, 'the battery should be 23kW.' The installer asked, 'do you mean 23kWh?' I did. kW is the inverter's output speed. kWh is energy capacity. Mixing those is the fastest way to buy a battery storage bank that cannot run your actual loads.

For any battery storage bank, ask two numbers: rated capacity and usable capacity. A 20kWh battery with an 80% depth-of-discharge limit gives you 16kWh of usable energy. If your targeted loads use 18kWh overnight, that battery is not enough.

Also ask whether the system can recharge the battery during a long outage. Some hybrid systems can feed the battery from PV; some can also charge from grid. The answer changes your backup plan for cloudy winter days.

5. Check the local permit and utility process before signing

An inverter can be technically perfect and still fail in review because the local building department or utility has rules nobody checked. I know because our project only got real approval after we forced the installer to spell out the utility timeline in writing.

Take 'solar panel battery storage gonzales' as an example. That phrase makes it sound easy. But if your project is in Gonzales, California, the correct process involves the local building permit, fire code requirements for battery placement, and PG&E interconnection rules. Exported solar gets valued lower than the electricity you buy, so a battery can shift solar into the evening and improve the payback. 6. Ask what the vendor refuses to do

This is the most underrated question in procurement. One vendor said, 'electrical and interconnection is our lane, but roof penetration is not. Here is a structural engineer we trust.'

'This is not our expertise. Here is who can do it better.' That sentence earned more trust than any cheap quote.

If a vendor says they can handle everything, ask who handles the part that goes wrong. If they say they don't do a specific type of battery or mounting situation, take that as useful information, not a failure.

7. Keep unrelated environmental objections from hijacking the review

During an internal approval meeting, someone asked, 'how many birds a year are killed by wind turbines?' I'm not an ornithologist. I cannot present official numbers from memory. I've seen a widely cited U.S. range around 140,000 to 328,000 from a biological conservation study, but don't quote me on that because I won't put my name on a third-hand stat.

Those kinds of questions are worth answering carefully, but they should not drive your inverter decision. Wind turbine bird impacts have nothing to do with the battery voltage in a proposal. Use them as a reminder to separate real technical requirements from dramatic claims.

Final checklist before you sign

Before I approve a quote, I now make sure it includes the exact model number, the rated and usable battery storage bank capacities, the compliance standard, the warranty registration path, and a named person who handles local permits and utility paperwork. If any of those are missing, I send it back.

Support is also part of the price. I once saved money buying from a reseller that was not registered with the manufacturer. When the part failed, the claim went nowhere. That was not solar equipment, and it was more than a few years ago, but the principle stuck with me. Cheap comes with a warranty only if the seller can actually honor it.

You don't need to be the engineer. You need to be the buyer who asks questions until the engineer's assumptions are visible. If a supplier makes you feel uncomfortable for asking, that tells you more than any datasheet.
