I run purchasing for a mid-size company (about 300 employees across two offices). We manage roughly $150k annually in energy-related equipment—solar inverters, EV chargers, batteries. When I started handling this in 2021, I had zero clue about solar tech. That meant a lot of phone calls, a lot of late-night Googling, and (uh, unfortunately) a few expensive mistakes. Below are the questions I wish I’d had straight answers to.
1. How much does a solar system cost?
Short answer: it depends—but not in a vague way. For a commercial rooftop system (30–50 kW), you’re looking at $1.50–$2.50 per watt installed (as of early 2025). That’s from quotes we collected across three installers. So a 40 kW system runs $60k–$100k before incentives. (That includes panels, inverters, racking, and labor—but not battery storage, which adds $10k–$20k more.)
I compare this to buying a car: the base model (grid-tie only) is one price; add a hybrid inverter plus battery and it climbs fast. The Growatt hybrid inverters I looked at were fairly competitive—around $0.12–$0.18 per watt for the inverter alone.
2. How do I find Growatt inverter fault codes?
You don’t need a technician for most fault codes. Here’s what I learned after our third false alarm: Growatt publishes a fault code list in the user manual (downloadable PDF from their site). Common ones we’ve seen:
- F00 / F01 – Internal fault (usually power supply issue; try a full restart)
- F09 – Grid voltage out of range (called our utility; they fixed a transformer)
- F12 – Ground fault (meant we had a damaged cable—took us a while to locate it)

3. Should I install a Growatt Smart Meter 1-fase?
If you have a single-phase residential or small commercial setup, yes, probably. The Smart Meter 1-fase (single-phase) lets the inverter monitor net consumption and export. Without it, your system just pushes power—you can’t track self-consumption. For us, adding it was $120–$150 supplied (not including electrician labour, which was an extra hour). That saved us from over-exporting and getting a surprise bill from the utility (we’re in a net-billing market where export rates dropped). (The ‘penny wise, pound foolish’ moment: I almost skipped it to save $120—then our first utility bill came and we owed $400 for importing at peak. Oops.)
4. What is duck curve energy storage—and do I need it?
The duck curve is that classic shape utilities see when solar oversupplies midday and drops off at evening peak. If your area has time-of-use rates, storing midday solar to use at 6–9 PM can pay off. We installed a Growatt battery system (10 kWh) at one site. It wasn’t about energy independence—it was about arbitrage. The battery cost ~$7k installed; we’re saving roughly $120/month on peak rates. Payback ~5 years if rates stay high. But if your utility has net metering (1:1 credits), you may not need storage. (Check your tariff first—we didn’t, and that was a process gap.)
5. Who handles EV charger installation in Hattiesburg?
I called around Hattiesburg this spring after our CEO bought an EV. We needed a Level 2 charger for the office. Growatt has a dealer network but doesn’t directly install. Locally, we used Hattiesburg Electric Services (they quoted $850 for installing a charger and wiring a new 40A circuit). There’s also SunPower by Solar South—they do solar + EV installs. The key? Ask if they’re familiar with the Growatt EV charger specifically. One electrician quoted $1,200 because he’d never installed that model. 6. Can I order a small batch of Growatt inverters for a pilot project?
Here’s something I love about Growatt: they don’t treat small orders like a hassle. I needed three inverters for a pilot building. Some distributors wanted a minimum of 20. Growatt’s direct channel let me buy just 3. No MOQ, no price penalty. That’s rare in this industry. (To be fair, larger distributors like AltE or Signature Solar also sell singles—but they mark up 10–15%. Growatt’s prices were the same for 3 as for 30. That matters when you’re a small buyer trying to prove ROI to finance.)
7. What support does Growatt offer for commercial installations?
We had two issues early on. First, we mis-wired the Smart Meter (our electrician’s fault). Second, we needed to update firmware on three inverters after a fault-code fix. Growatt’s support line (available 8 am–8 pm ET) handled both within a day. They also have a WhatsApp bot for instant fault code lookup—I use that more than the manual now. (The tradeoff: phone wait times can be 10–15 minutes; email replies take 24 hours. But for the price point, it’s better than I expect.)
