My $3,200 Growatt 10kW Mistake: Why the Highest Rated Surge Protector Still Won't Save You

Here's my position: the quality of a solar installation is the brand. Not the logo on the inverter, not the wattage on the spec sheet. The brand is whether you read the manual, torqued the terminals to spec, and protected the equipment from the things you can't see.

When I first started installing solar, I assumed same brand meant same specs. Didn't verify. It doesn't. Same AC breaker, same torque, same strip length. Wrong.

Highest rated misses the point. The right surge protection is a coordinated system: a Type 1 or Type 2 surge protective device at the service entrance, as required by NEC Article 230.67 for dwelling units; another SPD at the inverter or sensitive electronics if the distance is long; and protection on both AC and DC sides, plus consideration for communication and trigger lines. No single box covers all of those.

Why does this matter? Because a surge protector's job is to clamp voltage in a fraction of a microsecond. The best rating in one location means nothing if the other locations are unprotected.

The surge protector I liked had a low voltage protection rating and a high surge current rating. But it was at the main panel, so it protected the main panel. It didn't protect the DC inputs of the Growatt inverter from a surge coming in through the solar array. That's a different layer of protection, and I had skipped it.

Use UL 1449 listed equipment and verify it is designed for the location. The highest rated surge protector in the world can't help if it's on the wrong side of the system.

This is even more critical for a mobile setup like a motorhome solar battery charger. The panels, charger, batteries, and inverter form a small power system. Lesson 3: Can I Use an Extension Cord With a Surge Protector? The Wrong Question

Here's the thing: a surge protector directs excess voltage to ground. If your extension cord is too long, too thin, still coiled, or missing the ground pin, the surge protector can't do its job. The voltage spike doesn't get diverted quickly enough. That's how sensitive electronics die.

For anything above 10 amps, use a grounded 12/3 cord, keep it as short as possible, and never daisy-chain it with another cord. If the cord is warm to the touch, the surge protector is not a solution. You've just added a fire waiting for a trigger.

The funny part? This lesson came from a customer who wanted to plug his motorhome solar battery charger into a shed outlet with a 50-foot 16 AWG extension cord coiled under a shelf. We installed a proper outlet instead. It cost more, but it didn't melt.

Quality is not about buying the most expensive equipment. It's about investing in the details that make the equipment work.
