5 Years of Solar Installer Mistakes: The $12,000 Checklist Every Installer Should Steal

Step 1: Verify the load calc before choosing a 5kW Growatt inverter

What most people don't realize is that an oversized inverter can be less efficient at partial loads. A 5kW inverter running at 60% capacity isn't necessarily hitting its peak efficiency curve. It's not a disaster, but you're leaving performance and money on the table.

The Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for energy storage is not a flat 30% on every battery. Under IRA Section 48E, standalone storage can qualify, but the rate depends on prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements. Without meeting those, standalone storage gets a 6% credit as of 2025. With them, it's 30%. If the battery is charged primarily by a co-located solar system, you need to show the solar supplies at least 75% of the charging energy to claim the full credit.

I lost a $2,400 credit for a client in Q1 2024 because we didn't document the charging source. The rule was right there in IRS Notice 2023-38. I just didn't check it before making a promise. My client was not happy, and I ended up covering the shortfall out of pocket.

Step 4: Run the numbers for wind turbines or solar panels — don't just pick a side

I've had clients ask about wind turbines or solar panels since I started. My first instinct was to dismiss wind immediately. Then, in 2023, a client in a genuinely windy location asked. I gave my usual speech about solar reliability. He found another installer, got a small turbine up, and it's been performing well (as of late 2024). I checked the wind data afterward — 12 mph average. That was not an obvious solar case.

Solar is the right answer most of the time, and when I say that, I do not mean it as a lazy default. Most sites have variable wind below 8 mph, shading problems, or zoning restrictions on tower height. But "solar wins 90% of the time" doesn't mean you skip the evaluation. A quick wind resource check takes minutes and makes you look consultative rather than biased.

A practical rule: if the site has average wind speeds above 10 mph, open land, or a client who needs overnight generation, run a proper comparison before recommending solar.

Step 5: What the red light on your surge protector actually means

Here's a support question that keeps my phone buzzing: "There's a red light on my surge protector, is everything dead?" In 2022, I replaced a perfectly good surge protector because I saw a red light and panicked. $350 wasted, and the client's real electrical issue remained unsolved. That was my "read the manual first" moment.

The truth is, a red light can mean several things:

  • Steady red: On many models, this just means power is present and protection is active. Some manufacturers use a red LED as the normal "on" state.
  • Blinking red: Often indicates a surge was absorbed and the protection may be compromised.
  • Red light with alarm: The MOV is compromised. Replace the unit.
  • No light: Could be power loss or a dead unit. Check the outlet first.

Units with a green-to-red wear indicator (common on UL 1449 rated suppressors) are different: red genuinely means the protection is gone. But not every red light is a failure light. Check the manual, check the labeling, and measure output voltage before swapping anything.

This applies to inverters and batteries too. Growatt's inverters and battery systems use LED blink patterns documented in the installation manual. I've seen "dead" batteries that just needed a reset sequence because nobody checked the LED chart.

Checkpoint: Look up the indicator light pattern in the manual before removing or replacing any component.

Step 6: Write commissioning records like warranty depends on it (it does)

In January 2023, I filed a warranty claim for a 3kW inverter that failed after 8 months. The manufacturer asked for commissioning records. I had nothing. No serial numbers, no firmware version, no energization date. The claim dragged on for four months, which could have been a two-week replacement if I'd had the paperwork.

Now I use a simple commissioning form on every install:

  • Serial numbers of all components, photographed and time-stamped
  • Firmware version, recorded on the day of installation
  • Date of first energization plus any startup error codes
  • Photos of DC and AC connections, especially grounds
  • Notes on unusual behavior during the first run

This takes about 25 minutes per system. Since mid-2023, I've used these records on three warranty claims (as of February 2025). That documentation has paid for itself many times over. I know it's tempting to skip this on a "small, simple" install. That's exactly how warranty claims turn into chargebacks.

Checkpoint: Create a commissioning template, fill it out on site, photograph it, and upload it before the end of the day.

Step 7: Schedule a 30-day post-installation review

Most system issues show up in the first month. Loose DC connections from thermal cycling, network communication dropouts, a customer's router that got replaced, an SOC threshold configured wrong. I once had a battery capacity threshold set 15% too low and didn't notice for weeks because we never went back.

In the past 18 months, my 30-day check-ins have caught 47 potential errors. That's not a typo — forty-seven. These were almost all quick, cheap fixes at the 30-day mark. If they'd gone unnoticed, they'd have turned into multi-hour truck rolls, or worse, warranty callbacks.

Most of these check-ins are remote: I review monitoring data and make a phone call. It takes about 30 minutes. If something looks wrong, I schedule a service visit before it becomes an emergency.

Common mistakes that still show up in my teams

Even with this checklist, I still see people trip on the basics. Here's my running list:

  1. Trusting the customer's description of their own usage. "Small farm, doesn't need much" — then you find a 5-ton air conditioner they forgot to mention. Verify for yourself.
  2. Skipping load calcs on "small" jobs. There's no such thing as a system where mismatched sizing doesn't matter.
  3. Not checking firmware at commissioning. Inverters ship with different firmware revisions. Always confirm.
  4. Quoting from memory. In a volatile market, stale prices are how margins die (note to self: stop doing this).

If I could redo my early years, I'd start with this checklist and save the $12,000. Since I can't time travel, the next best thing is making sure newer installers don't pay that kind of tuition.
